As reported by The Lexington Ledger

Lexington, SC (Paul Kirby) – The driver of the Nissan that crossed the center line of Hwy. 6 near Blackville Road and struck a pickup truck killing its driver last Sunday morning, has now been arrested and charged with felony DUI involving a death. The SC Highway Patrol brought the charges after an investigation by their specially trained and equipped M.A.I.T. team.

Jason Alexander Gregory, 44, was denied bond Wednesday morning by a Lexington County judge. He is currently in the Lexington County Detention Center awaiting trial.

Gregory allowed his vehicle to drift left of the highway’s center line. When he collided with the pickup truck, Juan Carols Chavero of Swansea, the driver and only occupant in the truck, died at the scene.

Too many fatalities related to drunk driving occur in South Carolina and in the United States. No one deserves to be injured or killed in a car accident. Sometimes accidents are unavoidable, but drunk driving accidents are completely preventable.

  • Every day, 29 people in the United States die in motor vehicle crashes that involve an alcohol-impaired driver.
  • The annual cost of alcohol-related crashes totals more than $44 billion.
  • In 2016, 10,497 people died in alcohol-impaired driving crashes, accounting for 28% of all traffic-related deaths in the United States.
  • In 2016, more than 1 million drivers were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or narcotics. That’s one percent of the 111 million self-reported episodes of alcohol-impaired driving among U.S. adults each year
